Workshops

RAVENSTAIL SPINNING CLASSES

Swiilawiid is so excited to announce a Ravenstail SPINNING class this month in Masset!

Are you interested in starting to learn the art of Ravenstail weaving? Are you a Haida citizen aged 13+? If yes, this opportunity might be for you! 

Join us with Yaahl Haana Kajuu Carrie Carty as she teaches us the art of Ravenstail spinning! For those who demonstrate commitment to the art and attend all classes, the program will continue in the new year with weaving classes where new weavers will create a potlatch pouch!

Four spinning classes will start every Monday from November 13 until December 4, from 6 - 9 pm at the Delkatla Wildlife Centre. 

If you know someone who would be interested but does not use social media, let us know, we can provide printed registration forms upon email request. 

Registration is open until November 6 at 9 am. 

Those who are selected will be announced on November 10 and will be contacted with all the information they need (i.e. what to bring and class details, etc)

STOP-MOTION ANIMATION WORKSHOP

Gaw Tlagee Youth Centre
August 28 - September 1, 2023
10AM -3PM

Swiilawiid is so excited to partner with the Gaw Tlagee Youth Centre to bring you the Stop-Motion Animation Workshop! 

Kids will be creating a short Stop-Motion Animation video that will feature a theme of their choice:

  • Why I love Haida Gwaii

  • Island foods (fish, berries, etc.)

  • Haida culture, language, and songs 

Participants will work in pairs and priority will be given to those who sign up first and can attend all 5 days. All finished videos will be proudly featured on Swiilawiid’s website.

All participants will learn about and exhibit these Haida Ways of Being: 

  • Respect - Yahgudáng 

  • Ask Permission First -  .Ahl Kyáanáng Tláagang 

  • Making It Right - Tll Yahda 

  • Everything Depends On Everything Else -  Ginn ‘Wáadluwan Gud .Ahl Kwáagíidang 

THE TEAM: 
Experienced and enthusiastic Emily Valente and Ileah Mattice will be the creative facilitators with Swiilawiid team members, Aaliyah Arens and Savannah Pelletier, providing support.
